OK, this is one of my rants. Sorry about that. But I am getting really sick of Americans who say stupid things like "Nobody ever thinks I am American." or "Everyone thinks I am Argentine." Now what the fuck is that all about? (Sorry...) I mean the second they open their mouth everyone knows they are an American. Who gives a damn? Yes, people have asked me if I am French, Italian, German, or from Holland, (and check this out - El Salvador) but so what? It is not a major conversation talking point.
I suggested the other day to someone new to Buenos Aires she join the BANewcomers Yahoo Group. The group at times can be somewhat pedestrian but there is a lot of good information that comes through. It is a place you can ask others advice or for referrals. The response from this idiot? "I don't live the ex-pat life. I have only Argentine friends." Hello, you are an ex-pat so you do live an expat life whether you like it or not...
Can you imagine someone in California saying "None of my friends are from Michigan, only from California." OR "I only have California friends, I live a California life." Now doesn't that sound rediculous? I always chose my friends because they were good people and interesting people. I do the same here, now that I live in Buenos Aires.
These are the same people that when I run into them in milonga they pretend like they don't see me. It is like they will get cooties from saying hello to another American. What these idiots dont know is that if they were truly wanting to be Argentine, they would greet anyone they know. It is considered very rude not to.
What is so funny is that you never hear French people or British or any other country going "Nobody ever thinks I am French or British or whatever. It is only the Americans. Why is this? What creates all this self-hatred? Hey, I am not proud of my government, but I love my country. I just choose to live somewhere else that I like better.
What I find is that the Argentines love having friends from other countries. I can't tell you how proud some of my friends are to introduce me as their friend from California. Some men that I have gone with out call me "Californita". So the attitude does not come from Argentines not liking foreign friends.
In the end it is like your age. You can lie about it, but the bottomline is you can't change it. So why bother to lie about it? If someone doesn't like you because you are too old or young, who cares? The same is true of your nationality. There are lots of people who will like you, because you are you.
OK, I feel better now.......
