I have always been proud to be American. I have never been one of these Americans who went into ecstasy while on vacation and someone could not guess where they are from. How many times have I had to listen to "Nobody thinks I am American." or "People always think I am from Europe." or when visiting here in Argentina and a random person asked for directions "I must look Argentine and not American, because today someone asked me for directions." Right, when you are lost you don't stop to analyze the nationality of people.
In my English classes I would talk to my students about life in the USA, most specifically in California. Everyone has their own experience. When I read on Facebook how the women think men are misogynists, all the racial violence, all the prejudice, it makes me sad. The gun culture makes me sad. This was not the country that I remembered living in, or even when I visit.
Politics have fascinated me my whole life. When I was in high school, 18 year olds won the right to vote. We fought for this right. The government was sending 18 year olds to war, but they could not vote. My parents and grandparents instilled in me the importance in voting. My grandparents came from Eastern Europe. The right to vote is special, and I was told not to waste it. I voted in every election since I was 18. I voted even when I was not thrilled about the candidates.
High school was the foundation for my political activism. My friends and I shut down our high school over the Vietnam war. We marched against the war, for women's rights. I continued that fight all of my life. The fair credit act, Title VII, a woman's right to choose. I worked for all of them.
I have been a Democrat my whole life. I would vote for a Republican if there was one I thought that was better than the Democrat. So far it has never happened. The Republicans have moved so far right, they are off the map. Abraham Lincoln must be spinning in his grave.
America, what the fuck did you do? You voted for a misogynist, racist, crude, bigot, to represent and lead the country. How could you do this? What were you thinking? Do you really thing a billionaire who has done nothing for anyone but himself is going to suddenly become benevolent? This is a man who has to go to court for fraud. He has 75 legal cases pending against him. You call Hillary Clinton crooked, but look who has to go to court.
America, I am very disappointed in you. You let me down. You let the country down. You let the world down. I am glad I live in Argentina. You blew it big time.
